Our Father: A prayer for this election

jenmichel@me.com

Our Father, Today, we affirm that we belong first, not to our political parties, but to you and your adopted family.

We affirm that your name alone is holy. Although we will vote in favor of a name - Barack Obama, Mitt Romney - our ultimate hope is in the one name that saves: your son, Jesus Christ.

We affirm our great confidence that your kingdom has already been inaugurated. No matter who takes his seat in the Oval Office next January, your Son has already been seated at your right hand - and everything will one day be made subject to him.

In this election, we remember our need for daily bread. These are times of economic uncertainty. We ask that you protect the vulnerable and provide for the poorest among us. Do this through the generosity of your Church and for the glory of your name.

Forgive us for allowing political division to severe our spiritual unity. We have judged our neighbors, failed to honor them, and because of blinding pride, considered our opinions as better that the opinions of others. In your mercy, hear our prayer.

When the polls close tomorrow, lead us away from temptation. Whether or not we celebrate the results, let us remember with great faith that you divinely appoint our leaders and grant them their authority. History is guided by your hand.

Whether Barack Obama is elected for a second term - or Mitt Romney proves successful in his challenge - deliver us from the evils of false hope or unwarranted despair. Our hopes do not ride on the outcome of this election.

There is a day to which we look forward, when political parties are abolished and presidents and kings and dictators have ceded their authority to Your Son, the crucified Savior and perfect Lamb of God.

That is the day of our hope. By his death, burial and resurrection, we are certain of its arrival.

Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.

Amen.
